The area just inside the pinch weld is weak - a single layer placed horizontally. The pinch weld is very strong - multiple layers of steel placed vertically. For unibody cars, the ESCO flat top jack stands are awesome - traditional jack stands are mostly made for traditional frames and the flat top stands let you better support the car by jack points or flat areas of the unibody.Jim, do you use them across the pinch weld? From a few hours worth of reading here I was thinking it best to position them parallel to the inside edge of the pinch weld. I personally believe that one shouldn't buy things your life depends on from Harbor Freight. They'll work but you can't expect a lifetime of use - they eventually fail (though neither of mine have failed yet).ĭon't forget jack stands! NEVER work underneath a car supported by a jack - always use jack stands. It will be so much easier on the jack points over time.Īs far as brands go, I've mostly heard mediocre things about Craftsman. If you have a sports car, the standard jack may be too high to fit underneath.Īdditionally, I strongly recommend the purchase of either a jack point adapter (very difficult to find) or, seriously, a regulation hockey puck if you EVER have to lift the car by the jack points instead of the frame or suspension. Make sure you get one that is short enough to fit under your car and that lifts as tall as you need. Other than that - it depends on your car. They're the perfect combination of low profile and high lift. If you want the best money can buy, I'm impressed by the AC Hydraulics jacks.
